Commonly Used Metal Surface Treatments

The parts have been thoroughly cleaned and deburred. With no special surface treatment being carried out, the surfaces display the marks left by the machining process.

Anodizing helps resist corrosion, increase surface hardness, improve wear resistance, and dissipate heat. We typically use Type II anodizing, which allows us to add tints or colors to your parts to enhance their appearance.

Provides a continuous, protective color finish on parts using evenly applied, heat-cured paint. Thickness is usually .006”-.012” and conforms to ASTM D7803 and various MIL and FDE specifications. Various colors and sheens can be chosen.

Chromate conversion coatings, also known as chem-film, improve corrosion resistance and conductivity properties and can be used as a base for paint. Chem-film coatings add very little thickness.

Sanding And Polishing

Sanding is used not only to prepare for painting but also to create the final surface effect. We can create brushed and satin finishes on metal and optically clear polishes on clear plastic.

Blasting

Blasting is the process of spraying some type of abrasive onto a workpiece. It's used to clean and deburr parts while preparing them both mechanically and chemically for subsequent surface finishing.

Metal Plating

Galvanizing is the standard coating for carbon steel and other alloys that will rust. We also offer chemical nickel plating, which protects against corrosion, oxidation and wear on irregular surfaces.

Black Oxide

Black Oxide is a type of conversion coating for ferrous materials, such as steel and stainless steel, that blackens the top layer of the material. It can be used to reduce reflection and glare, as well as provide some corrosion resistance

Vapor Polishing

This is a specialized in-house process for achieving optical clarity on PC plastic. This process can also be used to repair minor surface defects and is ideal for achieving an extremely clear surface on complex geometries or hard-to-reach areas.

Heat Treatment

Heat treatment of metal parts to improve material properties. Includes quenching, tempering, and other heat treatments. Specify required treatment in the "Notes" section or on an attached drawing. Conforms to ASTM B917 or AMS-H-6875.
